Ted Leonsis is Co-Executive Chairman of aXiomatic and a nationally renowned entrepreneur, investor, and sports team owner. He is the Founder, Chairman, majority owner and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, as well as Founder and Partner of Revolution Growth.
Leonsis is well-known as a pioneer in the internet industry and was instrumental in transforming America Online (AOL) into a global phenomenon. AOL first began in 1983 as Control Video Corporation and featured a single product: GameLine, a service that hooked consumers’ Atari 2600 consoles to their phone line to enable game rentals for $1. During his almost 14-year career at the company, Leonsis served as president of America Online Services Company, president of AOL Studios, president of AOL Web Properties, vice chairman and president of AOL Core Services, vice chairman and president of AOL Audience Business and vice chairman emeritus. AOL recorded its greatest levels of innovation and growth under his leadership, including the 1997 launch of AOL’s WorldPlay service which gave users a range of online games in which they could compete against each other, worldwide. Also under Leonsis’ guidance, AOL launched its popular instant messaging feature (commonly known as AIM); in fact history’s first-ever AIM was by Leonsis to his wife on January 6, 1993.
Since then, Leonsis has focused on Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns and operates the 2018 Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals (NHL), the Washington Wizards (NBA), the Washington Mystics (WNBA), the Washington Valor (AFL), the Baltimore Brigade (AFL), and Capital One Arena (downtown D.C.). During his tenure as owner the Capitals have become a team that sells out nearly every home game, cementing one of the most popular hockey teams in the country.
The company also owns Monumental Sports Network, a first-of-its-kind regional sports network for digital, mobile and over-the-top platforms. Customizable features and the ability to deliver content across multiple platforms and devices allow users to access content wherever and whenever they prefer. Monumental Sports Network offers an OTT service providing live streaming of Mystics and Valor games as well as additional live events and games.
Ted is also the Founder and Partner of Revolution Growth, a fund which invests speed-up capital into disruptive businesses including DraftKings, Sportradar, Bedrock Manufacturing and Sweetgreen.
