Bruce Karsh is Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, a leader among global investment management firms specializing in alternative investments. He is also Chief Investment Officer and serves as portfolio manager for Oaktree’s Distressed Opportunities, Value Opportunities and Multi-Strategy Credit strategies. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the firm manages $100 billion in assets as of December 31, 2017.
Prior to co-founding Oaktree, Karsh was a managing director of Trust Company of the West, and he was the portfolio manager of the TCW Special Credits Funds for seven years. Before joining TCW, Karsh worked as Assistant to the Chairman of Sun Life Insurance Company of America and of SunAmerica, Inc., its parent. Karsh also has been an attorney with the law firm O’Melveny & Myers. Following law school, he served as an appellate clerk to the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy, presently Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Karsh is an Executive Board Member of the Golden State Warriors and Trustee Emeritus of Duke University, having served as Trustee from 2003 to 2015. Karsh also served as Chairman of the Board of DUMAC, LLC, the entity that manages Duke’s endowment, from 2005 to 2014.
Karsh and his wife, Martha, founded in 1998 the Karsh Family Foundation which focuses on educational philanthropy. To date, the Foundation has made grants and pledges of over $200 million to support education and scholarship at all levels. Their largest gifts have been for financial aid at Duke University, University of Pennsylvania, Spelman College, Brown University, and Virginia Law School, as well as major grants to KIPP and Teach for America.
